Maverick Magazine CD Review:

Independent album with possibilities of radio success which, with the aid of some effective marketing, could see this  rocket to the top of the Billboard 100 Album Charts. Having not heard of Jay previously, as he has been a champion bull rider in his time, this album seemed an uncertainty; will his music hit the spot or be passed off as an album with a lot of ambition but no quality. Well, after hearing this 13 track album, which was all written by Jay, it can certainly be said with vigour that this is one album which does have ambition but a heck of a lot of quality; the kind that resonates in the ears long after first hearing it.

With it's end of the night honky tonk sound, Second Chance sounds more like a Garth Brooks track than one written by someone who used to be an expert at riding bulls. It has a radio friendly sound about it, but unlike any of the other tracks which seem perfect for the radio, it revives the old time style of country music a la the 1990's sound. Carrying the same theme of which it's title describes of, the brilliant Honky Tonk Hall Of Fame fails to stop a smirk from being raised. Sounding like a classic country track but having difficulty in figuring out it's exact influence, this is one song perfect for downtown Nashville and the sooner this tune is played on their jukeboxes the better. A true classic country song for sure. With it's title certainly one that every whiskey drinker can relate to, Six Pack Pretty has a tongue-in-cheek sound about it which takes the situation of trying to pick up a woman after one Wild Turkey too many and turns it on his head with an almost pro drinking message. If only all country songs could do that than this wonderful type of music which is country music would be much more popular around the world, especially here in the UK. Either way, this is yet another song by Jay which has the title of potential classic written all over it.

With exquisite writing talents to match his sublime voice which is both silky smooth and whiskey covered, Jay Hollis is one act that Nashville and the entire country music world will come to love and adore. As long as he continues to show his type of ability he will discover unlimited success beyond his wildest dreams.

“Jay Hollis is the real deal, from the soul, no frills, country music. He has an outstanding voice and is just plain good folks. If you are looking for an artist who sits down and talks to you with his music Jay is your man.”

I met Jay back in 2005 when he performed at Johnnie High’s Country Music Revue and I have to admit, he showed up with a spirit and style that only seasoned pros bring to the stage, along with a hatful of great tunes that I found out later he’d written himself. My respect
and admiration for this talented young man grew as we worked together producing his first record in the studio. With a heart for great lyrics, an eye for the finer details, and an ear for the subtle licks and nuances that make a great recording, I think Jay is quite possibly one of the finest entertainers I’ve had the privelege of knowing!

“Jay Hollis and his band bring a new refreshing
approach to the music scene in Wichita Falls. He is a prime example of the quality country music that comes from the heart of Texas and is always a crowd favorite. Jay has a keen ability to play songs that all generations
like and genuinely loves what he does. With a very smooth and mellow voice, Hollis’
music is rhythmic and addicting. Like watching a good movie you will want to stick around for the start, finish, credits, and special features.”
