The interesting thing about this studio recording is that Johnny Hodges is absent. He’s replaced by Paul Horn. By all accounts Hodges was unwell and missed the session. To hear Hodges playing Suite Thursday can I recommend the Cd “The Great Paris Concert”. This was recorded on the bands 1963 European tour. It’s very well recorded. It makes for a good comparison with the studio recording and brings to the fore what Hodges brought to the sax section. Duke thought Johnny Hodges was an integral part of the sound of the orchestra. In fact when Hodges died in May 1970, Ellington went so far as too say that “because of this great loss our band will never sound the same “,and I must say it didn’t.

Thank you for posting this. I love this suite for the way it balances the sheer power and vigour of the orchestra with the elegance of Ellington and Strayhorn's writing. .
