Liberty(Key D) – Traditional Bluegrass & Old-time acoustic music played using Guitar, Banjo, Fiddle, Bass, Mandolin, Dulcimer, Dobro etc.

INFO
LIBERTY fiddle tune. AKA and see “Reel de Tí-Jean”
(Canadian), “Tipsy Parson (1),” “Raccoon and the
Possum (The),” “Spanish Polka,” “Liberty Dance,”
“Liberty Two-Step,” “Liberty Hornpipe.” Old-Time,
Bluegrass; Breakdown. USA, Widely known. D Major.
Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Silberberg): AABB
(most versions). The first recording of the tune
was by Texas fiddler Bob Wills in 1947 for
Columbia records, and although there is no
information on where he may have obtained the
tune. He is known to have had some of his
repertoire from his father, but it is only
speculation that the tune was in the Wills family
prior to Bob. It was quickly and widely
disseminated in North America following Wills’
recording. Tommy Jackson;s 1954 recording of
“Liberty” for Dot Records may have helped
popularize the tune among American fiddlers, and
Don Messer’s 1953 recording (“Liberty Two-Step”)
and Bob Hills & his Canadian Playboys (“Reel de
Tí-Jean”, 1955) were influential in Canada.
Although assertions have been made for further
antiquity, there is no evidence that has come to
light for earlier origins. [Bob Wills signed with
Liberty Records in 1959, but the tune in his
recorded repertoire long predates this as being a
source for the title].

ABOUT THESE RECORDINGS: In an earlier life, when I was involved in playing folk and bluegrass music; with the help of Rick Townend and a few other musicians I recorded a set of 7 CDs with more than 70 tracks of acoustic recordings of well know bluegrass, old-time and folk tunes, these were intended as helpers for musicians to learn these tunes. They are played in easy keys, and at slowish / moderate speed so that new players can keep up. They have also been found useful as music for country dance such as Appalachian clogging where slowish versions are needed. All music copyright© Rod Smith all right reserved.

When originally released, these were known as the “Just The Tune Series” and also included tablature for the tunes for guitar banjo, mandolin etc. I am also looking for some way to make these tabs available for download in PDF format.

INFO-WHISKEY BEFORE BREAKFAST. AKA and see “Spirits of
the Morning.” Canadian (originally), Old Time;
Breakdown. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle).
AABB. A widely known tune, often mistaken for an
old traditional old time tune (it was even listed
on one album as “an Irish tune which has been
popular in America for a number of years”). It has
generally been credited to the mid-twentieth
century Manitoba, Canada, fiddler and composer
Andy deJarlis (known for his fine waltzes)
probably on the strength of his copyrighted
arrangement (it is a common practice among music
publishers to copyright arrangements of
traditional tunes). ” “Whiskey Before Breakfast”
was included in deJarlis’ book Canadian Fiddle
Tunes from Red River Valley (1957), where he is
credited for the arrangement,

bluegrass, and versions have repeatedly appeared

have written about the song and the song is the
subject of a forthcoming documentary film.

Old Joe Clark(Key A) – Traditional Bluegrass & Old-time acoustic music played using Guitar, Banjo, Fiddle, Bass, Mandolin, Dulcimer, Dobro etc.

INFO
Old Joe Clark is a US folk song, a mountain ballad
that was popular among soldiers from eastern
Kentucky during World War I and afterwards.[1] Its
lyrics refer to a real person named Joseph Clark,
a Kentucky mountaineer who was born in 1839 and
murdered in 1885.[1][2] The “playful and sometimes
outlandish verses” have led to the conjecture that
it first spread as a children’s song and via play
parties.[3] There are about 90 stanzas in various
versions of the song.[1] The tune is in the
Mixolydian mode.

Lyrics

1. Old Joe Clark, the preacher’s son
Preached all over the plain
The only text he ever knew
Was high low jack and the game

[Chorus]

Fare thee well Old Joe Clark
Fare thee well I’m bound
Fare thee well Old Joe Clark
Goodbye Betsy Brown

2. Old Joe Clark had a mule
His name was Morgan Brown
And every tooth in that mule’s head
Was sixteen inches round

Chorus

3. Old Joe Clark had a yellow cat
She would neither sing nor pray
Stuck her head in a buttermilk jar
And washed her sins away

Chorus

4. Old joe clark had a house
Fifteen stories high
And every story in that house
Was filled with chicken pie

Chorus

5. I went down to Old Joe’s house
He invited me to supper
I stumped my toe on the table leg
And stuck my nose in the butter

Chorus

6. Wished I had a sweetheart
Put her on the shelf
And every time she’d smile at me
I’d get up there myself

Chorus

LYRICS
In the Pines”, also known as “Where Did You Sleep
Last Night?” and “Black Girl”, is a traditional
American folk song originating from two songs, “In
the Pines” and “The Longest Train”, both of whose
authorship is unknown and date back to at least
the 1870s.

Leadbelly Lyrics

My girl, my girl, don’t lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don’t ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, where will you go
I’m going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don’t ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through

Her husband, was a hard working man
Just a mile and a half from here
His head was found in a driving wheel
But his body never was found

My girl, my girl, don’t you lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don’t ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, where will you go
I’m going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don’t ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, don’t lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don’t ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, where will you go
I’m going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don’t ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
